An Ark for the Poor, originally published in 1995, is a history of L’Arche. Jean Vanier himself revised this updated edition as he looks back on 47 years of L’Arche communities.

Founded in 1964 in Trosly-Breuil, France, L’Arche communities can now be found worldwide. L’Arche is dedicated to the creation of faith-based day programs, support networks and homes for people with  intellectual disabilities.

Flowing through the book is the philosophy and spirituality of L’Arche, which has has allowed it to grow from a humble home of three men to a worldwide group organization operating in over 40 countries.
